Embassy Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Patrick A. Chuasoto welcomes guests at the free screening of seven Philippine short films on 22 February 2018 in celebration of National Arts Month.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Philippine Embassy hosted a free community screening of seven (7) Philippine short films on 22 February 2018 at the Philippine Chancery Annex building as part of its National Arts Month celebrations.

Describing cinema as a highly accessible art form, Embassy Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Patrick A. Chuasoto highlighted the growing popularity of Philippine short films among domestic and international audiences because of their artistry, boldness, and diversity.

“‘Shorts’ combine the advantage of low production costs and the challenge of compressing a good narrative in 30 minutes or less. They therefore represent a unique type of creative expression, testing the artistic mettle of those involved in their making,” CDA Chuasoto said.

The seven featured films were the Embassy’s entries to the EuroAsia Short Film Festival, an annual screening of short films from the United States, Europe and Asia taking place across multiple venues throughout Washington, D.C.

They are Siopao by Patti Lapus and Kevin Santos; Fine Dining by Lance Katigbak; Creative License by Paolo Dy; The Dreamweaver by Jedd Rommel; Strings by Rafael Daniel Evangelista; QWERTY by Paoly Dy; and Timora Talli Apuera Si Ramil (Ramil Might Be Outside) by Roberto Oquias, Jr.

The screening was the first cultural event to be held under the auspices of Sentro Rizal Washington DC, which is slated to be formally inaugurated in June. It also capped the Embassy’s celebration of National Arts Month 2018 that bears the theme “Ani ng Sining, Alab ng Sining”.

This year’s celebration in Washington, D.C. included Celebrating Filipino Design, a static display of the creative works of Kenneth Cobonpue, Anne Pamintuan and Impy Pilapil at the lobby of the Philippine Chancery Annex building, as well as the social media spotlight #LuvInFilArt that features Philippine artworks whose theme is love.

The occasion was also an opportunity to invite the community to the Ambassadors’ Tour, which will take place on 9-15 July 2018 featuring the top destinations in Manila, Cebu, and Bohol. ###
