STATEMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS SECRETARY ALAN PETER S. CAYETANO
ON THE CONGRESSIONAL GOLD MEDAL CEREMONY HONORING FILIPINO WORLD WAR II VETERANS

In a ceremony held on 25 October 2017 at the Emancipation Hall of the United States Capitol Complex, the Filipino Veterans of World War II were awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal, the highest expression of national appreciation for distinguished achievements and contributions in the United States.

Pursuant to the "Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2015," the Congressional Gold Medal was given on behalf of the US Congress to the Filipino Veterans of World War II in recognition of their dedicated service.

We welcome this important gesture by the US Congress to pay tribute to the gallantry and sacrifices of the more than 260,000 Filipinos who fought alongside their American brothers-in-arms in the Philippines during the last world war.

The award to the Filipino Veterans is an important milestone in the continuum of events beginning in the middle of the 20th century that changed the history of our nations and the lives of the families touched by the war. Our common World War II experiences had become the foundation upon which were built over the years, the deep friendship and vital partnership between the Philippines and the United States, and their peoples.

As the Congressional Gold Medal is awarded in Washington DC, we affirm and celebrate how the stories of our two great nations have been brought together by the shared sacrifices of our soldiers in war time; and the shared commitment to freedom and democracy of our peoples in peace. ###
