The Spirit of Edsa
Ambassador Willy C. Gaa
22nd Anniversary of EDSA I
Embassy of the Philippines, Washington DC
22 years ago, brave men
and women, courageous soldiers and civilians, bold clergy and laity,
changed history and placed the Philippines on the path of democracy and
freedom.
Though hard-won, keeping the fire of democracy and freedom would prove
an even greater challenge.
Today, the face of many challenges that seek to reduce it to dying
embers, that fire continues to be kindled by the desire of the Filipino
to remain true to the spirit of EDSA.
The spirit of EDSA lies in uplifting the lives of the poor and in
Filipinos helping their countrymen.
We must remain dedicated to this spirit.
The world stood transfixed in 1986 as we overthrew decades of
oppression.
Let us stand together and remain true to the spirit of EDSA as we work
to free the Filipino from the shackles of poverty.
Those of us far from our homeland must keep faith with this spirit. In
our own way we must play a part in building a stronger country and a
more robust economy.
Let us build on what our leaders have brought us through effective
reforms and policies.
Our economy is growing. International investors and business have great
confidence in our people and our economy.
We must keep the spirit of EDSA in our hearts and recommit ourselves to
serving our country and our people.
